STOP Hunger Scholarship Recipients 2007

In 2007 the Sodexho Foundation announced a new program to recognize students who are active in the fight against hunger and poverty in the U.S. In this, the inaugural year of the annual STOP Hunger Scholarships, five students have been named for demonstrating an exemplary spirit of service.

The 2007 STOP Hunger Scholarship recipients are:

Jeanette Clark -- Minneapolis, Minnesota

Jeanette is earning respect daily as a senior at Augsburg College through her contributions to the community. She has etched her name through the halls of Augsburg College by playing an integral part of The Campus Kitchens Project’s annual ‘Turkeypalooza’, a program that provides a complete Thanksgiving meal to families in need. Jeanette also demonstrates her commitment to volunteerism by serving as the coordinator for The Campus Kitchens Project which enables college students to volunteer, lead, develop, and serve in a setting that makes a difference in the fight against hunger. Through her actions, Jeanette is going to leave the community a little better than the way she found it.

Cristina Jennings -- Atlanta, Georgia
Cristina has earned the respect and admiration of her peers and school staff at Inman Middle School where she is an eighth grader due to her contributions and volunteerism within the community. She has participated in many local community food drives providing meals for Hosea Help the Hungry and Homeless. Cristina is the founder of the “Joy in a Bag” program which provides assistance to single mothers going from Welfare to work. Cristina is the type of person that will make a difference in the lives and welfare of the citizens of Atlanta.

Hillary Krisman -- Tulsa, Oklahoma
Hillary is an outstanding ninth grader at Union Intermediate High School. She has demonstrated great character and personal strength by volunteering on a weekly basis at the Iron Gate Soup Kitchen in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Hillary also shows her commitment to the community by supporting her local Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma which provides meals to over 50,000 people each week throughout the community. Hillary is a leader of tomorrow blazing the trails today.

Gregory Leonard -- West Warwick, Rhode Island
Gregory is a senior at West Warwick High School in West Warwick, RI and is highly regarded by many of his classmates and school staff. Each month he can be found volunteering at Shepherd’s Table, a community soup kitchen for people in need. Gregory also demonstrates his volunteerism through programs such as “Scouting for Food”, where he collects canned food products for clients at the local food bank. As a representative of the Class of ’07, Gregory has demonstrated his commitment to the fight against hunger.

Tatum McWhirter -- Atchison, Kansas
Tatum stays busy as a sophomore at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, where she is earning a degree in Theology. Her devotion to the community outside of the classroom is demonstrated through her volunteer efforts working for the Hunger Coalition preparing lunches for the homeless. She also manages her time by volunteering with the The Servants of Christ Community Center, the local soup kitchen. Tatum knows that some of life’s greatest lessons are learned outside of the classroom and she is learning one of life’s biggest lessons … Everyone Can Make a Difference.

Each student selected as a national honoree will receive a $3,000 scholarship award as well as a $3,000 grant made in their name to the hunger-related charity of their choice in their local community. National honorees will also be recognized at the annual Sodexho Foundation Dinner on June 11, 2007 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC.
